IRS to help create UP Inland Waterways Authority


The Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) and the Uttar Pradesh transport department have signed an mou to establish the UP Inland Waterways Authority, aiming to develop and regulate inland waterways in Uttar Pradesh.

 

The IRS will assist in formulating the authority and developing rules based on the IWAI Act 2021 and IWAI Rules 2022. It will also provide technical support to ensure the implementation of best practices for safety and environmental initiatives, as well as identify upscaling opportunities for skill enhancement.

 

This partnership seeks to leverage the state's river network for efficient transportation, enhance connectivity, and stimulate regional development.

 

Transport commissioner Chandra Bhushan Singh emphasised the economic and environmental benefits of this initiative, including low-cost and green transport options, potential for pilgrimage tourism, and contributions to river conservation.

 

IRS officials assured their full support and expertise to ensure the success of the UP Inland Waterways Authority. The mou signing ceremony included notable officials from both the IRS and the transport department. (pb)
