Intermodal freight traffic gains momentum


Transport performance in goods traffic in Switzerland fell by 2.2% in 2019 compared to the previous year. Road haulage reported a decline of 2.7% and railfreight dropped by 1.4%, the Federal Statistical Office (BFS) said. Transport performance on the Swiss road and railway network totalled 27.2 billion tkm.

 

Rail's share remained unchanged at around 37% in 2019, with road haulage taking the remaining 63%. In heavy-duty transports with trucks and semitrailers, transport performance within the Swiss borders was by far the most important segment (65%).

 

According to the statistic, intermodal freight traffic has gained in importance. In this area, the share of heavy-duty road haulage amounted to 5.2 million net tonnes (1.7%), whereas the railways stood at 20.7 million net tonnes (around 34%). In transalpine traffic, intermodal transports accounted for even three quarters of the total. (ben)
