Intermodal alliance off to a good start
The Log4NRW initiative (Logistics for North-Rhine Westphalia), a German alliance of ports and railway operators, has established new intermodal links between Emmelsum, Duisburg, Dortmund and Kreuztal (western Germany). The initiative provides onward services to major German seaports, also connecting maritime transport in the port of Hamburg with the Kreuztal terminal, for example.
More and more shippers now use the service, according to project partners Delta Port, Duisport, Hafen Dortmund and the Kreisbahn Siegen-Wittgenstein railway. A regular train timetable is in preparation.
Initially, two container trains a week will shuttle between southern Westphalia and the Ruhr region. The new connections will remove around 27,000 truck journeys from western Germany’s roads. (ben)
