Innsbruck airport struck off airfreight map

The long-standing attempts to stabilise the airfreight business at Innsbruck Airport (INN) have failed: Austria's media reported that the airport in the state of Tyrol’s capital is closing down cargo operations on 31 January.

Due to economic difficulties, INN wound up the cargo subsidiary in 2013, and began to manage an own cargo handling department again. As figures continued to decline, INN awarded the cargo operation contract to the Innsbruck-based forwarding company Kapeller - the only interested party.

However, even that firm was unable to put airfreight operations on a sound economic footing. The competition offered by Zurich, Munich, Milan and Vienna is just too strong, leaving INN with only around 200 kg of pure airfreight per day. (ah)
