Innovative technologies to boost railfreight

Germany’s federal ministry of transport and digital infrastructure (BMVI) is investing EUR 7 million to support DB Cargo’s innovative projects “automotive shunting locomotive" and "automated braking test".

With these projects, Europe’s largest railfreight company aims to accelerate the digitalisation and automation of train composition in wagonload traffic. In shunting yards (train formation depots) thousands of trains are put together every day. The aim is to automate the shunting locomotives deployed for this task.

All the trains’ brakes are manually checked before every departure. Sensors and radio transmission are intended to speed up this process and enable remote control. (ben)
