Innovative shuttle train saves time and CO2
SBB Cargo and Swiss Post have jointly tested a new type of shuttle train on runs between major parcel centres in Switzerland. The new model is intended to save time and CO2.
For the pilot project, two Eem923 hybrid locomotives were placed at the head and tail of the train, with six converted freight wagons for twelve containers in between.
This train arrangement eliminates the need for locomotive changes, and, thanks to the use of hybrid locomotives, the composition can drive directly into the terminals of the parcel centres. Shunting is no longer required, which makes operations more efficient and faster.
SBB Cargo and Swiss Post now want to evaluate the test in detail and then decide how to use the innovative shuttle train in future. (ben)
