Industrial railway testing new fuel
In Germany, Dortmunder Eisenbahn, a subsidiary of the rail logistics company Captrain, is testing the Clean Diesel fuel developed by the green tech start-up Heion. In the pilot project, 30,000 litres of the fuel will be refuelled in locomotives for the first time worldwide.
The test phase will initially involve locomotives used in factory traffic and on a highly frequented route in the Ruhr region.
Thanks to its improved technology, the new fuel burns more efficiently and significantly reduces diesel consumption as well as CO2 and nitrogen oxide emissions. It has already been demonstrated that this type of fuel saves 6.5% of CO2 in road transport. (ben)
