Indian Railways moving further away from fossil fuel
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has signed an agreement to provide USD 750 million to fund the Indian Railway’s track electrification project. The loan will be used to install electric traction equipment along 3,378 km of existing railway lines, which will enable the migration of passenger and freight traffic from diesel to electric traction.
The project is part of a broad five year, USD 132 billion modernisation programme that will help India’s railway sector transition to electric power and move away from its dependence on fossil fuels.
The project also encompasses network expansion plans such as the development of dedicated freight corridors. (ben)
