India to lead growth in Asia
After an all-time high in 2018/2019, the global market for freight wagons began to slow down already at the end of 2019.
This development was driven primarily by China Railways, which failed to fulfil its procurement plan for up to 210,000 freight wagons between 2018 and 2019, and by Russia, which has more or less completed its fleet renewal programme, a study conducted by SCI Verkehr concludes.
Although the consultancy expects total market volumes to increase to EUR 1.2 billion by 2023, this figure is below the calculated rate of inflation. In fact, SCI forecasts a slight decline in delivery volumes over the medium term. Growth is expected only for Asia, with India being the most upbeat market. (ben)
