India: more freight and faster trains
Despite Covid challenges, Indian Railways continued its high growth momentum in terms of cargo handling and earnings in August 2021. The company's freight volume in August 2021 amounted to 110.55 million t, which is 16.87 % more than in August 2020. The railway earned IND 10,866.20 crore (EUR 1.25 Mio) from cargo handling during August 2021, which is 20.16 % higher compared to August 2020.
Among the most important commodities to be shipped in August 2021 were 47.94 million t of coal and 13.53 million t of iron ore.
The company also improved the performance of its freight trains on the existing network over the last 19 months. The trains now travel twice as fast. (ben)
