India invests in its rail system on a grand scale
Indian Railways has initiated 498 railway projects of a total length of 49,069 km, which are at different stages of execution/planning/sanction. The commissioning of 8,979 km has been achieved.
The plan includes 188 new line projects measuring 21,295 km in total, 55 gauge conversion projects of a length of 7,275 km and 255 doubling projects of a length of 20,500 km, according to the Indian government.
Based on operational requirements, a thorough review of the enhancement projects was carried out and the projects were prioritised. Presently, the balance length of super critical projects is 2,347 km, 5,676 km for critical projects and 9,703 km for other doubling projects. (ben)
