India extends its multitracking infrastructure
India’s government has approved seven rail multitracking projects with an estimated cost of around INR 32,500 crore (USD 3.91 million). The multitracking projects cover 35 districts in nine states and will increase Indian Railways’ existing network by 2,339 km.
The extension along essential transport routes will enlarge the freight capacities available for a wide range of commodities such as foodgrains, fertilisers, coal, cement, fly-ash, iron and finished steel, clinkers, crude oil, limestone and edible oil.
The upgrades are expected to increase freight traffic by around 200 million t per annum and help India achieve its climate goals, while reducing its logistics costs. (ben)
