Increasing rail capacity for Mid Canterbury
New Zealand’s railfreight carrier Kiwi Rail has signed an agreement with Fairfield Freight Hub, paving the way to increase rail volumes through Kiwi Rail’s current Ashburton rail site and creating the potential for a new container terminal and freight hub outside Ashburton.
It is expected that the agreement will raise rail capacity from currently about 500 container movements per year to 6,000 in the short term and to 20,000 if the new hub is established, Kiwi Rail said.
In early March, Fairfield Freight Hub, which is wholly owned by Wareing Group, will begin operating Kiwi Rail’s existing Ashburton container site. The current site will remain open until the new site is ready for use. (ben)
