Increased rail capacity in Virginia

After two years of construction, the central rail yard of the US port of Virginia has been enhanced with two new rail track bundles and three all-electric cantilever rail-mounted gantry cranes. The extension gives additional rail capacity to the port to handle total 2 million teus by train annually - an increase of 455,000 teu of annual on-dock rail capacity.

The rail yard is served by Norfolk Southern and CSX. Both US class I railways provide regular, on-dock, double-stack services.

Virginia is currently seeing a steady growth of rail cargo volumes coming from the US East Coast and bound for markets in the Midwest. (ben)
