Improving rail access to northeast corridor in USA
In the USA, Quonset Development Corporation has received a USD 3 million federal grant for the Quonset freight rail enhancements and expansion project, designed to increase freight train capacity at the Quonset Business Park and provide easier access to the port of Davisville RI and the USA's northeast corridor.
Rail car volume in Quonset Business Park has tripled since 2007, and the transport infrastructure, including the rail system, is at or approaching its capacity limit.
The expansion project foresees raising the inbound and outbound freight capacity by creating 1.8 km of new rail siding, capable of accommodating 58 rail cars. The new rail siding will be utilised as storage tracks. (ben)
