Improving cross-border roads in western Africa

The African Development Fund has approved loans totalling EUR 156.66 million for Burkina Faso and Mali for upgrading and asphalting cross-border roads linking the two landlocked West African countries to Côte d'Ivoire.

The programme will be implemented until 2030 and is co-financed by the Islamic Development Bank and the European Union with EUR 138 million and EUR 25 million, respectively.

The funds will be used to revamp a total of 242 km of road and improve the national and regional transport logistics chain. As landlocked countries, Burkina Faso and Mali rely heavily on overland corridors linking them to the seaports of neighbouring coastal countries. (ben)
