Improved starting power for locomotives in Brazil
58 locomotives manufactured by GE Transportation are being fitted with battery systems from the French-based firm Saft. The broad-gauge diesel-electric locomotives will provide freight hauling services for Brazilian rail operator MRS Logistica.
The 64 V batteries deliver the cranking power to start a 16-cylinder engine up to 14 times a day, according to Saft. MRS Logistica controls and operates the south-eastern federal railroad network connecting the states of Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais and Sao Paulo.
The transition to rail freight has prompted MRS Logistica to make a major investment into a new fleet and into upgrading its existing broad-gauge locomotives. (ben)
