ICS welcomes zero-emissions project
The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) has welcomed the new 'zero-emissions shipping' project. Its objective is to ensure that at least 5% of the global merchant fleet operating in transoceanic traffic is propelled by fuels with zero emissions by 2030.
This project is part of the 'mission innovation' initiative which was launched in 2015 by the European Commission and 24 other countries to accelerate R&D investments in clean energy in all sectors.
ICS has highlighted in a statement the synergies of this project with its proposal to create an R&D fund, endowed with USD 5 billion, to accelerate the development of technologies that allow to have a commercially viable zero-emission ship by 2030.
In its statement, ICS calls on the governments of the countries that are part of ‘mission innovation’ to collaborate and support the initiative of the maritime research fund in the next session of the IMO marine environment committee (MEPC’76).
The ‘zero-emissions shipping’ project is led by Denmark, Norway and the United States, with India, Morocco, the United Kingdom and Singapore as members; and France, Ghana and South Korea making up the support team. (cd)
