Hydrogen to replace diesel
US short line rail road Sierra Northern Railway (Sera) has unveiled the new look for its hydrogen powered switching locomotive, which is to replace an older tier 0 diesel unit. The production of the zero-emission locomotive is making progress and is slated to be completed on schedule.
The California energy commission awarded USD 4 million for the design, integration, and demonstration of a hydrogen fuel cell switching locomotive.
Sera currently operates 120 km of track in Northern California and 50 km in Southern California through the heart of a number of the golden state's prime industrial areas and interchanging with both BNSF Railway and Union Pacific Railroad. (ben)
