Hybrid-electric RTGs arrive at Bayport terminal

Port Houston has announced the arrival of six new hybrid-electric rubber-tired gantry (RTG) cranes at the Bayport Container Terminal, part of a broader initiative to enhance sustainability and efficiency.

Since December 2023, the port has acquired 26 new RTGs, with this recent delivery being the fourth of five scheduled for this year.

The hybrid-electric cranes, which significantly reduce emissions and fuel consumption compared to traditional diesel-powered models, are a step towards the port's goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The cranes reduce NOx, PM, HC, and CO emissions by 90%.

An additional batch of RTGs is expected to arrive at the port by the end of the year, bringing the total number of hybrid electric RTGs to 57 out the 147 RTGs in service in its terminals. (pb)
