How sustainable is Hapag-Lloyd?
In 2020, Hapag-Lloyd’s fleet was using IMO 2020-compliant low-sulphur fuel oil, thereby reducing its sulphur-oxide emissions by roughly 70% compared to 2019. This can be deduced from Hapag-Lloyd's latest sustainability report. In addition, fuel savings of around 15% were achieved on 39 vessels by removing fouling from their outer hulls.
The carrier has converted a large container ship to dual-fuel propulsion, which can operate with liquefied natural gas (LNG). And it has joined the race for megaships by ordering container ships – each with a capacity of more than 23,500 teu – with dual-fuel engines that will also be able to run on LNG, thereby reducing CO2 emissions by around 15 to 25%.
