HMM trials 3D printing onboard containership

HMM has launched a pilot project to test onboard 3D printing technology on its 9,000 teu vessel the ‘HMM Green’.

The system, known as a ‘3D Printing Digital Workshop’, uses metal powder to produce stainless steel parts with the durability required for shipboard use. The trial aims to evaluate the feasibility of producing essential maintenance parts at sea, reducing lead times and minimising inventory and downtime costs.

If adopted, the system could support rapid, on-demand manufacturing of critical components during voyages. HMM signed an mou in 2023 with HD Hyundai, Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Energy, Korean Register and ABS to support this initiative.

“We’re committed to strengthening our competitiveness through cutting-edge technologies and active R&D in the maritime sector,” an HMM official said. (ah)
