Helsingborg tests self-driving terminal tractor

In collaboration with Terberg and Easy Mile, the port of Helsingborg is testing an autonomous terminal tractor in its container terminal. The initial phase will be conducted outside regular production times to ensure the system's readiness for live testing by the autumn.

The aim of the project is to assess the maturity of the autonomous system and identify technical challenges, providing insights for the planned "new port" set for 2030. The driverless vehicle, equipped with advanced sensors and controlled via pre-programmed routes, will still require human supervision from a remote location.

Terberg's 'drive by wire' terminal tractor and Easy Mile's expertise are central to this initiative. The project will proceed in phases, starting with brake and load testing and progressing to live operation alongside port crew, with a safety driver onboard to monitor and intervene if necessary. The initiative is a step towards integrating autonomous technology into port operations, the partners said. (pb)
