Hapag-Lloyd: 2021 puts wind in the sails

Carriers cannot help making money these days. While the volumes transported moved sidewards with 11.9 million teu (2020: 11-8 million teu) in 2021, Hapag-Lloyd's revenues went up by 43% and increased to approximately EUR 22.3 billion in total.

The shipping group's ebitda surged to EUR 10.9 billion. Hapag-Lloyd identified as the main drivers of this development improved freight rates resulting from very strong demand for goods exported from Asia.

Nevertheless, the major disruptions in global supply chains led to a significant increase in transport costs, which can mainly be attributed to a higher average freight rate of 2,003 USD/teu (2020: 1,115 USD/teu). Hapag-Lloyd will publish its 2021 Annual Report with the audited financial figures and an outlook for the current financial year on 10 March 2022. (sh)
