Hamburg: turnaround takes time

The big ports worldwide are taking longer to reboost than the carriers. In Q3/2020, the decline in seaborne cargo in Hamburg, Germany’s largest port, reached 8%. The port had lost 16.2% in Q2/2020. Thus, it is too early to speak of a recovery, but there are reasons for optimism.

From January till September, 93.2 million t of seaborne cargo were loaded or discharged in the Port of Hamburg’s terminals. That marks a drop of 10.7% compared to the previous year. Containers lost a little less, coming down to 6.3 million teu (-9.9%). All segments of cargo throughput were affected.

General cargo declined 9.9% to 65.2 million t and bulk cargo was down 12.4% to 28 million t. All in all, imports via the Port of Hamburg decreased by 14.4%, while exports were down by 5.5%. (cd)
