Guadeloupe holds a steady course in 2019

The Caribbean Grand Maritime Port of Guadeloupe (GPMG) has reported its traffic figures for 2019, speaking of "encouraging results". After a record year in 2018, GPMG's freight traffic experienced a slight setback in 2019. The total volumes recorded a decrease of 4% in 2019, reaching 3.6 million t.

This decrease is explained in particular by a decline in containerised transhipment traffic, given the reorganisation of maritime services from and to Europe that took place in the course of 2019. The restructuring required slightly more time than expected (stabilisation of stopovers and type of vessel). On the other hand, domestic container traffic maintained a good momentum with a positive development of 3%.

During 2019, the channel was deepened from 11 to 15 m and a 1,280 t and 68 m high gantry crane was acquired to accommodate the increasingly larger vessels calling at the port. (mw)
