Growing RIX wants to attract even more cargo
Cargo volumes at Riga airport (RIX) have risen by over 20% since early 2024, driven by Lufthansa Cargo’s regular connection. More than 3,000 t have been processed this year.
Meanwhile, the airport has launched a tender for the first phase of reconstructing apron 4, backed by EU funding. The project covers over 80,000 m², creating ten new aircraft stands, service roads and upgraded lighting. An electrical substation will ensure compliance with modern EU requirements, alongside a new video surveillance and drainage system. Designed for dual-use civil and military operations, the project enhances cargo capacity and military mobility.
Riga airport handles 37% of Baltic air cargo and aims to strengthen its ‘Cargo City’ hub with this expansion. The first-phase of the invitation to tender closes on 8 April, with completion set for 2027. (ah)
