Growing in style
Miami International Airport (MIA) handled 2.7 m t of freight in 2021, shattering its previous record of 2.3 m t in 2020 by 17%, for its second consecutive year of growth.
International freight grew by 17% to 2.2 m t, domestic freight by 15%. MIA continues to rank as the busiest airport in USA and ninth busiest in the world for international freight. MIA’s sustained and robust upward trend in cargo volume spurred two major facility expansions that were completed in 2021.
In November, DHL Express completed a USD 78-million renovation and expansion of its MIA hub. In December, Fedex Express completed a USD 72.2-million, 12,820 sqm expansion of its hub at MIA (photo), doubling its total facility size to over 26,200 sqm.
The enhancements include a new customs clearance area and a new 6,500 sqm cold chain facility, the largest in the global network of the logistics services provider. (ah)
