Green hydrogen from Iceland?
A new source for clean fuels is in the making. Landsvirkjun, Iceland's national power company, and the Port of Rotterdam have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to perform a pre-feasibility study regarding the export of green hydrogen from Iceland to Rotterdam. According to the MOU, the parties also agree to the exchange of knowledge, with the aim of exploring new opportunities of cooperation related to hydrogen.
Recently, Landsvirkjun announced that it had launched a feasibility-study for developing a hydrogen production facility at the Ljósifoss Hydropower Station, about 70 km outside of Reykjavík.
The production will be carbon-free, through the electrolysis of water with renewable power. In addition to being a suitable transport fuel, hydrogen can be used for electricity production and heating and for a range of other purposes. (cd)
