Gotthard: test runs in the west tunnel

Following the derailment of a freight train a year ago, the 57 km Gotthard Base Tunnel in Switzerland is now due to be fully reopened on 2 September. Trial operations have been running since yesterday (Monday, 19 August 2024).

A passenger train from Chiasso to Basel (Switzerland) was the first to travel through the repaired west tunnel early in the morning, followed by an SBB Cargo International goods train travelling from Ludwigshafen (Germany) to Gallarate (Italy).

On 10 August 2023, a goods train operated jointly by DB Cargo and SBB Cargo derailed due to a broken wheel in the west tube of the tunnel. The accident caused considerable damage, totalling CHF 100 million to CHF 130 million (ben)
