Gothenburg's traffic recovering slowly
Freight volumes are coming back: Sweden’s Port of Gothenburg handled 411,000 containers in H1/2021 – an increase of 2% compared to the same period in 2020. The addition of new rail destinations in the spring supported the growth of intermodal hinterland traffic.
In H1/2021, rail-borne container freight rose by 11% and by 19% in Q2. The port’s intra-European ro-ro traffic recorded a particularly strong uptick of 14% in H1/2021. All destinations in Germany, the Benelux countries and UK showed a positive development.
The port’s throughput of new vehicles increased by 38% in H1/2021, due mainly to the Volvo companies regaining lost ground. The only sector not to have improved during the first six months was energy products, with volumes down by 17% to 9.8 million t. (cd)
