Gothenburg on course
Sweden’s port of Gothenburg was less affected by the geopolitical turmoil and economic slowdown in 2023 than other ports. Most cargo sectors saw an uptick, with the container segment taking the lead with 914,000 teu handled. This marks a growth of 3% compared to the previous year, 16,000 more boxes than the port's previous peak in 2012 and the best year in the port's 403-year history.
Currently, the port of Gothenburg handles 57% of Sweden’s container traffic. Intra-European roro traffic decreased by 4% to 540,000 units in 2023. The throughput of new cars rose by 13% to 267,000 in 2023, while the port's energy volumes decreased by 17% to 18.4 million t compared to the previous year.
439,000 t of bulk cargo were handled, which is an increase of 17% year-on-year. Imports declined by around 20% in the first three quarters and by 10% in the fourth quarter of 2023.
Intermodal traffic expanded, however. Approximately 60% of the containers transported on land between the port of Gothenburg and the Scandinavian hinterland go by train. (cd)
