Good news for ammonia-powered ships
At the Posidonia trade fair, DNV awarded HD Hyundai Mipo an approval in principle (AIP) for designing a new ammonia dual-fuel feeder container vessel. This achievement results from collaboration between HD Hyundai Mipo, Win GD, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, Kangrim Heavy Industries, and DNV.
Ammonia, a potential zero-carbon fuel, poses challenges due to its toxicity, making safety a priority. HD Hyundai Mipo's vessel, featuring an engine by Win GD and a Type C fuel tank to minimise leakage risks, incorporates AI technologies for autonomous navigation and integrated safety control.
Vidar Dolonen of DNV Maritime emphasised the significance of this development in promoting low-carbon ammonia-powered vessels, enhancing the maritime sector's sustainability efforts. (pb)
