Good cargo performance at HKIA
Airport Authority Hong Kong (AA) has announced the 2020 air traffic figures for Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA).
In 2020, the world's biggest cargo airport handled 87.7% less passengers and 61.7% less flights than in 2019, whereas cargo throughput remained relatively stable at 4.5 million t, a yoy decline of 7%. Moreover, the airport handled 68,660 cargo flights, an 18.3% surge compared to 2019.
In December, HKIA saw only a 0.2% yoy drop in cargo handled to 443,000 t. Imports and exports continued to grow, climbing 18% and 8% yoy, respectively. Transhipments decreased significantly due to shortage of belly capacity on passenger flights.
Vivian Cheung, executive director, airport operations for the AA: "In 2021, we will continue to work closely with the airport community in managing the continuing challenges and prepare for the recovery of passenger traffic when the pandemic subsides." (ah)
