Global trade faces rising protectionism

Industry executives gathered in Montreal at the “Shaping the Future of Shipping Summit” on 13 June, which was organised by the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) and the Chamber of Marine Commerce, Canada (CMC), to address global trade challenges. Key issues included rising protectionism, geopolitical conflicts, decarbonisation, future fuels, and seafarer recruitment.

ICS chairman Emanuele Grimaldi highlighted the negative impact of increasing unilateral trade barriers and urged governments to recognise their detrimental effects. The summit underscored the importance of reducing restrictive trade policies to boost global economic growth. Participants also discussed the importance of seafarers and launched an ICS seafarer recruitment video.

The next forum will be held in Hong Kong during Hong Kong Maritime Week in November this year. (pb)
