Global idle fleet crosses threshold of 3 million teu
The pandemic forces all carriers to idle segments of their operated tonnage, now amounting to 3 million teu, according to the latest figures of Alphaliner. The maritime intelligence provider said that this number surpasses the previous peak mark of 2.46 million teu reported at the beginning of March.
Among the more than 250 sailings turned down for Q2/2020, there are also high-capacity loops like the AE-2/Swan of 2M. Thus, the deployment of twelve mega vessels with a capacity of 23,000 teu each on this Asia-North Europe connection was called off.
About a third of the idle capacity, 1.02 million teu, is undergoing retrofits during this period, mostly for the installation of scrubbers. (mw)
