Germany’s rooftop PV potential
Only around 19% of commercial and logistics buildings in Germany are equipped with photovoltaic (PV) systems, according to a study by Fraunhofer IIS and the 'Power of Logistics' initiative.
Based on AI-supported image analysis of 120,150 hall roofs, the research found considerable untapped solar potential, especially in larger properties. Industrial buildings between 40,000–50,000 m² show the highest PV share at 23%, while 84% of halls over 50,000 m² remain unused.
Logistics properties in the 40,000–50,000 m² range lead with 36%, though 81% of larger roofs lack solar coverage. Regional differences are also evident: Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria top the list, with over 26% and 24% PV rates respectively, while city states like Hamburg and Berlin show the lowest. (js)
