Geis banks on autonomous local transport
In Germany, the Geis Group is starting a project at its headquarters in Bad Neustadt to further develop autonomous truck driving using the 5G mobile radio standard.
The project is designed to run for three years and is part of the "5G-InnoPlatt-NES" joint initiative launched by the Rhön-Grabfeld administrative district. The aim is to accelerate the implementation of Industry 4.0 applications through 5G technology.
The 5G network is currently being set up on site. It will enable Geis to drive tours from its Bad Neustadt logistics terminal to a Bad Neustadt customer with a pilot vehicle - autonomously and, if necessary, remotely controlled by an operator. Among other things, the innovation could help combat driver shortages in the future, says Geis.
