Fund supports US rail environmental project
Stockton Terminal and Eastern Railroad (STE), an affiliate of Omnitrax, was awarded a USD 1.8 million grant by the California Transportation Commission to the US short line railroad’s environmental and safety project.
The project will modernise infrastructure on the STE to handle the influx of alternative diesel fuels that comply with California's low carbon fuel standards.
The grant will fund a safety modernisation resurfacing and rail tie replacement programme that removes deteriorating 100-year-old rail, rehabilitates degraded switches for essential connection points and replaces six grade crossing surfaces in the track work limits.
Work is scheduled to be completed during 2021 and the upgrade is expected to eliminate 1,302 t of CO2 emissions and 2 t of NOx emissions each year. (ben)
