Fuel efficiency in road transport
As the Girteka Group reports, road transport currently generates 755 Mt CO₂, and the EU aims to cut heavy-truck emissions by 15% by 2025. While battery-electric and hydrogen fuel-cell trucks are potential solutions, infrastructure and cost barriers slow their adoption, reports Girteka.
For over 6.4 million medium and heavy trucks in the EU and an average fleet age of 14.2 years, eco-driving offers an alternative. Programs have shown that fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions could be reduced by 10–20%. A truck covering 120,000 km annually consumes around 33,600 liters of diesel, producing approximately 96 tonnes of CO₂. A 10% fuel reduction could save over 9 tonnes per truck.
Beyond emissions, eco-driving focuses on steady acceleration, optimized braking, and route efficiency. Training programs with real-time feedback should help drivers improve fuel efficiency. (js)
