From Rotterdam to Russia

As an important hub of raw materials in Europe and worldwide, the Port of Rotterdam has explained its relation to the sanctions. Russia accounts for 62 million t (13%) of the nearly 470 million t handled in the Port of Rotterdam. The country currently imports about 30% of crude oil, 25% of liquefied natural gas and 20% of oil products and coal through the port.

Russia also exports products such as steel, copper, aluminium and nickel through Rotterdam, which for the time being are not covered by the trade restrictions announced by the European Union. Nearly 10% of Rotterdam's container traffic is linked to Russia and is closely scrutinised by customs for "dual use" cargo.

Various container terminals and shipping companies have decided not to accept or handle containers bound for Russia at this time. Further steps are expected. (sh)
