From asphalt to water
The EU project "Innovative Waterway Transportation" aims to promote eco-friendly inland shipping by shifting more cargo from roads to inland waterways. Bremenports is working with 25 partners from Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, France, and Sweden on this cross-border initiative that includes eight real-world experiments in the North Sea region to boost inland shipping.
Bremenports creates practical guidelines for transferring and adapting such approaches in other regions. One experiment explores establishing a fixed container route by inland ship between Bremerhaven and Hamburg, reducing road congestion and greenhouse gas emissions. The project addresses various options to transfer cargo to the waterways, offering a flexible toolkit for planners. (pb)
