Freightliner lands large bulk haulage contract
Freightliner Heavy Haul, part of the US company Genesee & Wyoming, recently started to haul aggregate from quarries in northern Somerset to terminals in London and southeast England.
Last year, Freightliner and Mendips Rail, a joint venture between two of the UK’s largest aggregate/cement producers, Hanson Aggregates and Aggregate Industries, signed a long-term, bulk rail-haulage contract. It represents one of the largest bulk haulage contracts in the UK.
Under the contract, Freightliner will haul an expected 8 million t per year (approximately 107,000 annual carloads) of aggregate. As part of the contract, Freightliner purchased eight locomotives from Mendip Rail. (ben)
