Foynes freight line to reopen by end of 2024
The Irish Foynes to Limerick railfreight line project recently reached a major milestone when Iarnród Éireann began laying down the track on this section of the rail network. The existing old track, including rails, sleepers and fixings comprised of jointed track on timber sleepers had reached the end of their lifespan and have all been removed, the Irish rail company said.
The reinstatement of the line in the southwest of Irland will facilitate the sustainable development of the Port Shannon Foynes and will enable to shift substantial quantities of cargo from road to rail. It will also improve connections between the port and supply chains in the hinterland. The renewed line will open by the end of 2024. The 42 km line originally opened in 1858 and was closed in 2001.
