Four seafarers rescued

Four Indian seafarers who spent two years stranded on a ship in Mumbai (India) in horrific conditions have finally gone home, thanks to help from Sailors’ Society.

As they stopped receiving their salaries three months ago, the men were not given shore passes or signed off so that they could return home.

Manoj Joy, from Sailors’ Society India, read about them in a newspaper, contacted them and, while he brought one of them to the hospital because of a suspicion about coronavirus, Sailors’ Society’s chaplain in Mumbai Rajesh Goli brought them food and pastoral support.

Joy: “They were treated like modern day slaves.” Sahabaj Khan, one of the seafarers, to Joy: “I express sincere gratitude on behalf of us for your generous support from the very date you came to know about our conditions. […] Words would fall short to describe how happy we are feeling now”. (amh)
