Four new services raise throughput in port of Hamburg
In the first half of 2019, the port of Hamburg raised its container throughput by 7.5% to 4.7 million teu. This upswing is due to the four new liner services that were introduced between Hamburg and ports in the USA, Canada and Mexico at the beginning of this year. Now a total of 14 liner shipping services provide direct links between the port of Hamburg and 29 ports in the USA, Mexico and Canada.
In addition, total seaborne cargo handling volumes increased to 69.4 million t (+ 4.1%). At 48.4 million t (+6.1%), the positive development in the general cargo segment contributed to this success. Bulk cargo throughput on the other hand remained more or less stable at 21 million t (-0.3%). All in all, eleven new liner shipping services opted for Hamburg in H1/2019; 3,046 containerships (+3.7%), including 89 ultra large container vessels with capacities of 18,000 teu and more (+36.9%) called at the port.
With the start of the building project to adjust the fairways in the lower and outer Elbe, Hamburg believes that it is well on course to strengthen its position compared to other ports in northern Europe. (cd)
