Four musketeers for one terminal


Container transport is increasing in comparison to bulk cargo. Duisburger Hafen (duisport) will withdraw its coal island from the market as from 2020 and build a trimodal container terminal on the site in cooperation with three international partners: the carrier Cosco Shipping Logistics, the railway operator Hupac and the inland shipping company HTS Group.

 

The new terminal will be developed into the key European gateway hub, especially for train traffic along the corridors of the new Silk Road. The hub will operate under the name of “Duisburg Gateway Terminal“. Currently, between 35-40 trains per week run between duisport and different destinations in China. In the future, there will be up to 100 China-bound trains per week. Rail traffic on the European rail corridors will run to destinations in eastern and south-eastern Europe in particular, and inland shipping services will be offered to the seaports.

 

When the terminal is finished, it will generate an annual throughput of around 850,000 standard containers (teu). On the 240,000 sqm area in the port of Duisburg, 220,000 sqm are planned for the terminal and 20,000 sqm for warehouses.

 

Six gantry crane systems, 12 block train platforms, each with a track length of 730 m, five loading areas and three berths for inland barges as well as a container storage area of 60,000 sqm will be completed in two construction phases. (fd)
