Four more alternative PCTCs ordered
Four new 7,000-unit capacity pure car carriers (PCTC) with liquefied natural gas (LNG) as their main fuel are to be built at Nihon Shipyard in Tokyo and Shin Kurushima Dockyard in Imabari-shi. The vessels are the second series following four initial LNG-fuelled car carriers, which are slated for delivery in 2024.
The newly ordered ships are scheduled for delivery in succession, through 2024 to 2025. This will bring the company’s total orders for LNG-fuelled car carriers to eight.
Compared to conventional marine fuel oil, LNG is expected to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide by about 25%-30% and sulphur oxide (SOx) by 100%. In June 2021, MOL defined its goals to achieve net zero GHG emissions by 2050. The company plans to launch about 90 LNG-fuelled vessels by 2030. (sh)
