Forwarder may still offer transport insurance

A. Hartrod can continue to provide individual insurance services to customers that do not have their own transport insurance. This support, particularly needed by small and medium-sized companies, appeared to be put at risk by a ruling of the European Court of Justice (ECJ) published in September 2022.

According to the ECJ ruling, freight forwarding companies that receive a remuneration are considered as insurance intermediaries which require a permit for this activity. For this reason, A. Hartrodt applied for a licence exemption from the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce early on. The exemption was granted at the beginning of this year, the company said.

The forwarder has been offering transport insurance in close cooperation with an insurance company (Assekuradeur) for many years. (ben)
