For the "greening" of ship recycling
On its recent 25th interim meeting, the ASA Ship Recycling Committee confirmed that, due to an increasing global demand for shipping, the result of ship recycling volumes in 2021 did not grow as anticipated and amounted to 24.3 million dwt. 2022 is expected to be about the same as 2021.
However, according to Clarksons Research, 2023 is projected to reach 45.5 million dwt due to the impact of more stringent environmental regulations and wider “green” pressure. The ASA SRC reconfirmed that there is an urgent need to develop SOC certified yards in as many countries as possible.
An important tool to foster this development would be the Hong Kong Convention (HKC) coming into force. The ASA SRC re-affirmed that China and Bangladesh hold the key for the early enactment of the HKC and the adopted action plans such as the priority release of vessels to green yards, the priority usage of HKC-certified yards and the support of yards in the process of obtaining SOC certification.
